When you already have a full time job and you still prefer to take on a second job, that is called moonlighting. The concept of moonlighting was once employed by underpaid workers as well as those who needed extra money. These days, many people consider working as models to make a second income; a good licensed talent agency can advise you on this.

With the current rise of today's cost of living, moonlighting is now even resorted to by successful professionals as well as by people from all fields and income groups. Most people like getting second jobs because of the skill that can be learned while at the same time being a free agent, working on your own time. While extra jobs used to be prohibited especially when you have a full time job, the practice nowadays is that most supervisors do not mind when their employees have work on the side.

The main and most common reason why people like to do a little moonlighting is because of money. Having extra income can be a big help in augmenting daily expenses. According to an author, there are lots of professionals today who seek second jobs because they consider it as a fallback, especially when they feel that their full time job is not as stable as it used to be.

Generally, many people resort to moonlighting because of money. We have to admit that earning extra income is a big help in trying to augment daily living expenses. An author once said that there are professionals today look for second jobs just to create a fallback, especially when they feel that their full time job is about to fold. On a similar note, there are some psychologists who believe that moonlighting or having a second career creates a sense of freedom for the individual because they are not restricted to just one employment. In another scenario, when a person wants to change careers or to have a second one, moonlighting will help him realize his dream. Because of this, he will be able to test the waters first before diving into it. In this manner, moonlighting creates an opportunity for a person to try different things.

However, because there are advantages, there are also disadvantages. When moonlighting you will have to manage your time well. Do remember that a second job will require ten or maybe twenty more hours of your free time. This will become an issue especially if you will have to balance your day job, your second job, and then your family and yourself. In addition to this, a time might come when both your day job and your second job will conflict. This is mostly the case in the software industry where patents and intellectual properties are kept confidential.

On the other hand, having a second job will require you to spend an extra ten or twenty hours each week. There might even be instances where a conflict of interest might arise. This is mostly the case with software industries. This is because the training and knowledge gained with the full time employer will be used and applied on the second job. Sometimes, there are employers who insist on having rights to your thinking.

Employees are also discouraged to take on a second job because of fear that they might be tired and get burned out. This is what employers try to avoid in the workplace because it can decrease an employees' productivity and quality output.

With all the foregoing, it may seem that having a second job may not be bad after all. The important thing is that you know what your priorities are, you know how to balance your time, and you know how to keep commitments. While supplementing your income is not a bad idea, you should also take into consideration the risks that might eventually crop up or the sacrifices that will have to be made.
