There are several methods of backing up your digital photos, but you'll find that all of them have pros and cons. If you're depending on one method alone, you should consider a second option to be sure you have back ups no matter what happens. From all of these options, I'm sure you'll be able to find a way to save your photos that works for you.

Utilizing a DVD Collection

By using this method you'll be able to easily store your photos, but the key is keeping enough DVDs on hand for saving images when you need to. Storage has now become so important in digital photography that it is now like the negatives of film cameras. Thankfully, retrieving digital images is often much easier than negatives.

Although one disadvantage of storing your photos only on DVD is that fire, tornado, or earthquake could take down your entire collection, when this option is coupled with online storage, you have the best of both worlds. When your computer and DVD collection are ruined at the same time, diligent work and memories apparently disappear. But, DVD storage combined with cloud storage gives you the best security and accessibility possible.

Utilizing a Hard Drive for Storage

The drawback to this method is the cost of an external hard drive, which is usually less than $100, but is not your least expensive option. With free online photo sharing sites, you're in good hands. But, if you have thousands of images, the cost of purchasing an archive CD from a "free" photo site could exceed the cost of an external drive.

Of course, just as with a DVD collection, you might be subject to the same problem of destruction to your main computer, causing problems with your drive. Then, taking a flash drive, while convenient might also be easily swiped by someone else. Yet, more commonly, you may have difficulty with power surges or failure that might erase your photos.

Utilizing Cloud Storage

With online backup, one deterrent could be the cost. If you haven't chosen the right service, you might not be able to recover your images in full resolution. Discovering that your images have been dropped from the free service can also be crushing, if you haven't made a purchase from the site recently. But, probably the worst option is seeing your work, slightly modified, because someone hacked into the cloud service. It's probably not a problem for most people, but it may become more common in the future.

Thus, from each of these methods, you can see that there is no easy solution to this problem. Instead, it's best to find something that is most appropriate for you, while keeping in mind that the more methods used, the better. Peace of mind comes easily with more than just one plan if there's ever a problem.
