Life In Suspended Animation

Billions of years ago, an tiny insect clambers up the twisted branches of an ancient tree, it gets distracted and unknowingly wanders into a droplet of tree resin. The insect struggles frantically but alas, every movement causes it to sink deeper until ultimately, it becomes fully encapsulated in the viscous substance. Hundreds of thousands of years go by, the tree resin hardens into a translucent fossil, and lies in wait until man discovers it and becomes the valuable stone that we now call amber.

Amber is unique from all other semi precious gems because in addition to being a beautiful translucent stone with a brownish-red hue, the small insects that are occasionally found entombed deep inside it, have been preserved in such a way that they are seemingly in suspended animation, appearing like they would spring back to life at any given instant because of how intact and unblemished their bodies are.

Maybe this unique fossil is the earth's way of fashioning memoirs that permit us to take a peek into the distant past and get a good grasp of what life must have been like when the earth was different and young.

These days, we don't need fossils and hardened tree resin just to form lasting tokens of past times, we now have access to the technology that gave us the art of photography. All you need to do now is snap a photograph and you will have instantaneously preserved a tiny fragment of your life. The resulting photograph acts as a link to the past that allows you to go back to that precise point in time, that split second when the picture was taken, and capture that memory forever.

And when it comes to preserving memories, people tend to lean towards those instances in life that have a lasting meaning for them. This is why graduation photography, maternity photography, and baby photography, are included among the most sought after categories of photography, since these types of photo shoots focus on some of the most significant times or chapters in a person's lifetime, and obviously, people want to have a memento from that time to keep the memory fresh in their minds for decades to come.
