Overcast skies can present problems when you are taking pictures, so exclude them from the image frame. If you have too much gray sky in your photograph, it will create a washed-out appearance in the image. If you find yourself shooting into overcast skies, taking classic, black and white photos may be your best option. If the day is not overcast, you can show as much of the sky as you want to, but make sure you are attentive to the lighting.

Take the proper amount of time so that you can pose your subjects. Candid photos don't always have the best results; help everyone to get a good photo by instructing them on how and where to stand or sit. This gives you a better shot of getting the perfect shot.

You can play with different colors and angles as well as utilizing the different features your camera offers. A good picture isn't all about the subject, it's also about the artistic way it is portrayed. A good photographer will be able to take a picture of a common object and make it stand out and look special, because of their artistic talent and skills. Practice and experiment until you find your own personal style!

Only 5% of your photos will be really great, but keep the losers around. Keeping a full portfolio of both your successes and failures will make it easy for you to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

When you are working with fast-moving subjects as part of your photos, make sure that you are using settings that will actually show the subject and not just blurs showing movement. This can be accomplished by increasing the ISO setting on your camera, and it's best to experiment a lot with this, until you get a feel for the right ISO setting for the effect you are after. What you'll be left with are crisper, cleaner, clearer shots of the moving objects you shoot.

Go outside when using flash in order to get rid of any shadows that could form when you shoot your subjects in bright areas. If you don't use the flash, your subjects might be cast entirely in shadow so that viewers can't tell who is in the photo.

Photographers will often focus so much on the background that the foreground is completely forgotten or an afterthought, but it makes up the bulk of the photograph and deserves a fair amount of attention. Compose the foreground of your shot to create a more striking frame and increase the appearance of depth.

When you are photographing a landscape, your photos need to be composed with three distinct and important planes of focus. These three components should be a foreground, mid-ground, and background. You need these for good photography and other art forms as well.

Know the range of your flash when you are using it in the dark. Your photo may be too dark if your flash cannot produce enough light. To get to know the range of your camera's flash, you should take the time to test it out so that you can take the best pictures when the time comes.

Taking pictures should be fun. They should be something that you do to remember a particular time, place or event that you want to be able to show others and recall yourself. Photography should remain fun, even when you are studying it.

Hold your breath while taking pictures to get the perfect shot, all while remaining still. Any little movement can ruin your shot. Take a spare second, right before hitting the shutter button, to hold your breath and get a straight shot.
