Picture Frames: A Buyers Guide

So you know about picture frames, and you know the different types you can get. Now you need to know about each specific category. In this post, I'm going to talk about glass picture frames. These frames are the by far the best looking. Glass frames consist of two thin glass pieces. In between these two pieces, there is a slit for your picture to go into. Glass picture frames look great, because of how thin they are. This creates a modern feel, and looks great.

Wood frames are usually a good choice when it comes to framing your pictures, but they do have a couple problems. Many people complain that when they get a wood frame, it often has knots or other imperfections in it. This isn't a flaw in the particular frame, it's how wood naturally is. If you want a perfect frame with no wood like characteristics, you would be better off with a plastic imitation or a nice wood veneer frame. Many wooden frames come unfinished. Unfinished wooden frames can be damaged easily. Glue, water, or any other liquid substance can ruin an unfinished wooden frame. When dealing with unfinished wood frames, be very careful. If you can, try and put a stain on it or finish it yourself.

Keep your photo at a place where the temperature does not rise above 24 degree Celsius and relative humidity stays between 30 to 50 percent. Low humidity can cause cracking and curling and high dampness can precipitate undesirable chemical reactions. Also, moist atmosphere can lead to the growth of fungi as well. In order to avoid such complications make use of mat or spacer so that the picture doesn't stick to the glass.

One of my other favorite types of frame is the silver photograph frame. You can buy modern looking silver photo frames but you will know that they will retain their look for years to come. They also suit any room so you know that if you buy one you can move them from room to room which provides great flexibility.

If you already have a relationship with an online art or photo supply house - that is, if you already have purchased framing supplies such as mat board - it's a good bet that they carry a good selection of ready-made and custom picture frames as well. Whether its a wood or metal picture frame, you'll probably have a fair number to choose from.

Mount boards are framing and matting supplies that form the base upon which the artwork is placed. Picture framing kits will often include mount board, but the framer will also want to have on hand some product to affix the artwork to the mount board. Picture corners or hinge tape are available in archival quality, and these framing and matting supplies work well for this purpose.
