You once again find yourself wondering what to do for your yearly family portrait this year. You reminisce your previous portraits, and though the traditional formal setup turned out beautiful, it did not exactly vary from the rest of the portraits taken a year apart. This year, for a change, you decide to get more innovative.

And then you start asking yourself which themes you must adopt. To help you decide better, keep these tips in mind.

Look at your family's personality, or perhaps hobbies you all share together. Are you all inclined to music? Does your family love to travel? Do you all prefer the colour red? Are you all fond of a certain film or television show, so much so that you are likely to adopt the characters in that certain show? Do you have favourite heroes?

Let this act as your inspiration for your portrait's theme. Adding props, like luggage, maps, and souvenirs from your trips will make the portrait of a travelling family a lot more vibrant and interesting, not to mention real. If you're a family of musicians, why not bring along a few of your instruments and let your photographers get creative with your portrait?

When it comes to photographers for family portraits, you have to remember to choose the best fit for your own needs. Photographers produce varied qualities of work; likewise, what is nice for one may not strike as good enough for everybody else. This is exactly why you should always look at a photographer's sample family portraits prior to signing up for a portraiture session. By considering these samples, you can gauge which photographer could give you the results you want.

Never hesitate to request suggestions on other creative concepts from your photographer. Likewise, you can always ask for tips on how to improve your concept even more and make it more photographable. Remember that the more the innovative input that goes into your family portrait, all the better it gets.
