Indian cinema has undergone many changes and has been divided into four sections such as parallel, diaspora, regional and commercial. These sections have a very thin line separating them and they tend to merge at times.

The success of the venture is based on the way it is treated. Parallel cinema show less talked about subjects in society and make films with them where as mainstream films hesitate in going ahead with these topics that might not be a hit.

Bollywood is the world's largest film industry with regard to production, with more than thousand films produced in a single year. However, a lot of people still misunderstand Bollywood for the entire Indian film industry. This is incorrect as Indian new wave cinema is also acclaimed internationally. New Indian films are shown in several famous film festivals and these movies are well appreciated internationally. For example, nine Indian movies were shown at the 2010 Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival), for the first time in 60 years of its existence. Peepli Live, The Man Beyond the Bridge and Road Movie received critics' praise after the screening.

Even though the conventional song and dance formula is kept in 21st century Bollywood films, directors are now exploring various dimensions of reality. New wave cinema and horror movies has certainly become capable of dealing with in-depth issues. This is visible in new Indian films like Peepli Live, (directed by Anusha Rizvi and produced by Aamir Khan) which concentrates on the mass suicides among farmers.

My Name is Khan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, seemed like a typical Hindi movie but is a hit one which got a lot of acceptance in the international arena. This film was part of the official selection of Berlin film festival and the tickets of My Name is Khan were sold out within no time for 1000 Euros each.

Several critics view Indian cinema as a shadow of its remarkable past. This may be partly true although mainstream cinema is largely dependent on what the audience wants. But then with the passage of time more movies are turning into progressive although in a subtle and delicate way unlike western movies which handle bold subjects well.
