The Dangers Of Unscrupulous Media

It seems that I am always running into speculation about the lives of movie stars, no matter where I am. Speculation is a customary practice for the media; they don't seem to have a problem with it. In many cases, the speculation is later proven to be untrue! Folks fail to understand, though, that the speculation can affect others' mindsets about the celebrities. Not particularly fair, right?

Why does sensationalism make people buy tabloids all about celebrity rumors? Inexplicably, folks feel good about reading it and want to talk about it later to family. "See, they aren't that great after all," seems to be the underlying tone when people talk about it. Is this the reason tabloids sell like hotcakes? Is it that somehow these tabloids are giving people a backward method of feeling positive about themselves? It's not to say that stars themselves don't play a role in encouraging gossip and sensationalism. In fact, some celebrities will do anything to get this kind of attention, even chewing out others, though many are against it. By contributing to the conversation, especially if they speak poorly of others, they enable it.

So what happens when a celebrity's honor has been tarnished, and wishes to stand up to this media? That may turn out to be easier said than done. There are difficulties they face, including getting more attention to whatever the issue was to begin with. Slandering or libeling someone is something common in today's society. Surely, there is something we can do to put a stop to this.

I think the first thing is to bring awareness as to how the simple act of doing these can be damaging. People should be more honorable; luckily, certain organizations are present to help foster more compassion in this field.

Sara Bronfman's organization, the World Ethical Foundations Consortium, builds compassion through the examination of the root of any issue (including dishonorable media), and the creation of solutions through the use of compassion. Just a bit of kindness goes a long way in this world.
