Getting a professional photographer that's perfect for your wedding is very similar to hiring a good professional in any field. It doesn't matter what the city or profession is, a lot of the same basic foundation rules apply. The major thing that tends to be true in almost any hiring process is using word-of-mouth and recommendations as a great resource.

Word-of-mouth is crucially important not matter what kind of a professional you are hiring. You basically want to ask everyone you know, from relatives to colleagues about recommendations. Just ask if they know who's good and who's bad. Ask about good and bad experiences that people have had and what they can give as advice and tips on hiring pros for weddings. It goes without saying, but if a certain person keeps getting mentioned, then go for that person.

On the other hand, if you are getting lots of different recommendations, and no consensus - you need to do a little more work on the front end. You should use additional factors and criteria to eliminate and filter out photographers and whom you should or shouldn't hire. I'll give you some simple ways to do this.

The first thing I would do is something that some people would consider to be superficial. I would tell you to eliminate people out based on personality matching. You want to see who you have good rapport and connection with. I want you to remember you can't go wrong whomever you choose at this point, in the sense that they should all be technically good at what they do. You're only picking from a pool of people who are equally recommended to you as being good. So you might as well go for people you like.

Having good communication with your photographer will make sure you are on the same wavelength. You want this person to "get" what you're about, which elements of the wedding excite you and which moments you are likely to want captured properly "on film". The more you like how the two of you communicate, the more likely the photography is to suit your needs and your tastes. So please do not underestimate this dynamic!
