There is a general misconception that whiteness and brightness of a writing material is the same thing. The two aspects have a major difference especially when the material is used to print color. However, there is a similarity between a bright paper and a white one in their reflectivity feature.

Brightness of papers is achieved by the degree of bleaching and by use of fluorescing agents used in achieving that purpose. This tends to give such papers the appearance of a dazzling white. Such a sheet will fluoresce under black light. Black light is also used in detecting counterfeit bills.

In theory, whiteness and brightness of papers affect the lightness and brightness of the images produced. In practice, less bright type of papers will produce relatively darker colors. On the contrary, brighter papers produce more vibrant colors. However, light colors in image appear washed out on exceptionally white papers.

To most people looking at papers, white ones always appear just white. When various papers are placed side by side, they show different colors ranging from softer and warmer white to a cool and bright white. The more blue light that reflects off the surface, the brighter and whiter the material appears.

It is also very important for people to know that different companies make papers of varying degree of brightness. The observer of these papers will also be a factor since different people will have different perspective to colors. Other factors that will significantly affect the brightness of color would be smoothness of the papers used.

People have different choices of the kind of brightness and whiteness they need. This is dependent on the nature of their printing project as well as cost. However, the above-mentioned ideas would apply generally to every individual. These tips can guide one so that they could be more selective in their purchases in order to ensure better quality printing.
