If you're new to photography, then it's natural for you to want to find a way to improve your pictures quickly. This article is just what you are looking for - tips that will get you started in the world of photography.

If you are shooting photographs in a florescent light setting, make sure that you adjust your camera's white balance settings appropriately. Different lighting needs to compensated for. If your fluorescent lights give off a blue tone, you may need to adjust for that to fix any unintended consequences.

When photographing people, keep the camera at their eye level. In this way, your photos will be very personal and the subjects will be elevated to a position of prominence. If you are taking pictures of children, you will need to get down to their eye level.

You can use the same golden rule used by painters for generations: divide the composition into thirds, top to bottom and left to right. Have your subject stand where a pair of these lines come together, rather than straight in the middle of the viewfinder to make the photo more interesting.

Stand closely to your subject. You will get the subject in the entire shot. This technique is especially effective with still life photography. You can use the zoom on the camera if you are not able to get close enough.

Night photography offers a unique atmosphere. When no natural lighting is available, it is vital to make sure that the little bit of light you do have and your camera settings will work well together. When photographing at night, you can employ the use of slow shutter speeds and a variety of artificial lighting options.

Set your camera's white balance manually. Almost all cameras automatically adjust the white balance. But, to control your own shots, manually set it. You can easily remove the yellowish tint that is so prevalent when shooting in artificial lighting, and thus control the overall effect of your images.

Don't purchase a camera which uses lithium batteries if you plan to take it with you when you travel. Because of a fire risk in the event the lithium batteries become overheated, you cannot bring loose lithium batteries with you onto airplanes. However, if these batteries are already encased in your camera, they are allowed on board.

Rather than being passive in your picture taking, you should take charge of all the subjects in your pictures. Have the courage to take charge and tell your subjects what to do. When you do this, you will find that your pictures will come out much better than if you just take a picture of whatever happens to be going on.

Skies that are overcast should be avoided in photographs. Your photo will look washed out if you have too much gray sky in it. If you still want to take pictures of an overcast sky, try a black and white feature. However, if it is a cloudless day, feel free to include as much of the sky as you desire.

Alright, now you need to get your camera and head out there and start taking some shots and practicing these tips. You will find your photo's quality improving in no time!
