The classic flat cap has been around for centuries. This type of headgear was cheap, comfortable and long lasting, making it popular amongst the working class. As time wore on its popularity grew and designers started to show interest in these commonplace items. A popular version of the flat cap was made up of eight or six triangular panels. These were sewn together and the small circle at the top was covered with a button or cloth knob. They were usually made from wool or tweed and lined with silk to make them more comfortable.

The cap worn by newsboys in the early twenties had a full, slouchy shape and a stiff front brim. They wore these to protect their heads when selling their newspapers on the street corners. Today, a newsboy cap is a trendy accessory worn by celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Rihanna. Another type of cap which is very well known is the snapback. This cap gets its name from the snap fasteners at the back which allow size to be adjusted. As this type of cap is worn for baseball, which is hugely popular in the United States, it has become as much part of every day wear as a pair of jeans.

However, the snapback has become popular with more than just baseball fans. It has become an integral part of the street fashion scene due to its popularity with hip-hop artists and skaters. It harks back to past eras for those want to pay homage to the late 80s and 90s but it is given an unmistakeably modern spin.

Although this type of headgear may have started off being worn mainly by men of the working class, this has changed completely over the years. Today they are being worn by every age, sex and type of individual. They have a trendy image thanks to the designers who make them and the celebrities who wear them.

There are designers who have chosen to recreate the styles of the past while others push the boundaries, creating more futuristic pieces. This headgear is usually made from fabrics like brush cotton twill, felt wool, wool-mohair blend, denim and even leather. Styles vary from elegant to fun and quirky. There are so many inspired prints available today that designers can let their creativity run wild.
