Different Types Of Punjabi Turban

An essential element of Sikh religion and culture is the Punjabi Turban. It is considered as a mandatory headgear for Sikh individuals but some of them wear it others don't. A spiritual and religious attitude is conveyed by the people who wear such headgear.

One of the majors reasons that they wear a turban is to cover their long hair that they particularly grow because of their religious values. Although it is a mandatory thing for Sikh males but it has been observed that many Sikh females also follow the tradition of wearing them. But the style of wearing male turbans is quite different to those worn by the females.

Double Patti is one of the most popular styles of wearing turbans. The most common style in rural areas of Punjab, India is this one and the fabric used for such purpose much be six meters long or even more. A long piece of cloth according to your desired length is cut into half and then it is sewed back together in order to create a pointed edge. As far as the number of layers is concerned, it totally depends on what your requirements are.

Another popular style is the Patiala Shahi turbans. It is more like an artistic style because the layers are not really symmetrical on both sides but instead of pointed look it represents more of a rounded look which is quite different. The required cloth length is dependent upon personal choice but it can be as long as 12 meters.

A style that is not quite common but worn by distinctive members of the community is the Chan Tora Dhamala. Its regarded as a headgear which was worn by soldiers in the army but nowadays it has become a part of military, air force and army uniforms. Just underneath the side of the forehead, a metallic sword and crescent are weaved into the cloth giving it a very unique look.

A traditional style which is quite popular is known as Amritsar Dhamal. This one is worn in a different way by using two different pieces of cloth with same width but they may differ in length as well as color. Traditionally this style was carried by well reputable individuals and Sikh gurus. White is a basic color used and one other color of your choice can be incorporated.

One of the techniques suitable for kids is called the Notai. A big bun of hair is made on top of the head just above the forehead and then its covered with the help of a large piece of cloth. Although this style is usually common for kids but many adults also prefers this type of look.

The above mentioned styles of Punjabi turban are just for guideline purposes but if you desire you can come up with your own distinguish style of wearing it. With a little help you can easily learn the techniques of wearing it yourself.
