Rapping is a primary component in hip hop music & reggae, but the trend predates hip hop culture by centuries. Rapping can be delivered on the beat or without accompaniment. The use of the word rap use to spell it out quick speech or repartee long predates the musical form, meaning originally "to hit". Today, the phrases rap and rapping are so closely connected with hip hop tunes that many use the terms interchangeably.

Hip hop music is an American musical style that developed together with hip hop culture, which is based on four key stylistic elements: Emceeing/rapping, DJ/scratching, breaking/dancing and graffiti writing. Other components include sampling or synthesis, and beat boxing. The term gangster rap music is often used synonymously with the term hip hop music, but gangster rap vocals are not necessary for music to be considered hip hop.

Creation of the term hip hop is often credited to Keith Cowboy, rap artists with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. However, Lovebug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap. It is considered that Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. Cowboy later worked the hip hop cadence into a part of his stage performance, which has been quickly used by other rap artists such as The Sugarhill Gang in "Rapper's Delight".
