I made the switch from boring old shirts and ties to funny Christmas t-shirts for kids last year for our seasonal, family photo and I do not regret it one bit! Our pictures came out so natural and organic, that I'm never going to do those rigid, posed pictures ever again. I would suggest doing the same to anyone else.

Making two five years olds put on shirts and ties and then stand still for at least an hour for the sake of a family portrait that they care very little about, is similar to giving a cat a bath. It's not easy to do, and it's going to be painful if you try. When I told the kids that they needed to get ready for last year's photo, the both groaned. When I told them that they could wear one of the funny Christmas t-shirts for kids that I had bought them, they looked at each other with a grin and immediately ran off to get ready.

We had always tried to take very similar portraits every years because I felt it would be a great way to show how the kids are growing and maturing. Well, it was also a great way to be dull and uninteresting. I don't know what came over me, but maybe I was just tired of being dull and uninteresting. I told the children to grab their funny Christmas t-shirts for kids and to go outside for the family portrait. They had a blast running around and playing while the photog got her equipment all set up.

Our first idea would be to just stand in the leaves, all bundled up against the chill in our bright scarves and hats with the children stood all arrayed around us in their cheerful, funny Christmas t-shirts for kids. That's not how the plan worked out, though, and I was happy to embrace the chaos. Our picture ended up being my wife and eye with our arms around each other in the center of the frame, with the kids running around us throwing leaves in the air. Our smiles were genuine and our eyes were bright. It was a perfect picture.

We included that picture last year as our greeting cards to all of our friends and family. The response back was amazing that year. Normally, we can only expect one or two letters in reply. Last year we got a reply from almost everyone we sent our cards to, and they were unanimously complimentary. If you take an annual holiday picture with your family, I cannot suggest enough that you let your kids have fun and let them wear funny Christmas t-shirts for kids. Then get a little creative with the chaos, because children really can't help themselves.
