If you have someone in your life with an avid interest in photography why not buy them a professional digital camcorder? If they have never used a professional version before they will be thrilled and amazed at the improvement in the quality of the images they capture.

The brand names that supply the professional models are similar to those that supply ordinary camcorders. But Sony, Panasonic, Canon etc know that people who buy professional quality are looking for better quality products. The average camcorder user is not going to complain too loudly about a less than perfect color match whereas a professional will. The difference is that the home movie maker has a less discerning audience that the professional who may be shooting material for paying customers.

So what can you expect to get for the highest price tag associated with a professional digital camcorder? Usually these products will incorporate the latest in technology advancements. When 3D camcorders are released the first models to incorporate this feature is likely to be the professional ones.

You will also usually see a greater number of functions. In an ordinary camcorder you may have an optical and zoom lens but in a professional camcorder there will be a lot more features available. You are likely to be offered a higher lens specification. A professional user would be expected to look at the expansion potential and the ease of switching between different types of lens etc.

There are three main formats associated with a professional camcorder being DVCAM, DVPRO and the more common DV. The sampling rate will determine which bracket your digital camcorder falls into. You will need to know which format it is as it will affect the type of professional editing software you use. The DV version is the most compatible format in a professional digital camcorder.
