In the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains in eastern California lies the national park called Yosemite. The Merced river flows throughout this beautiful reserve and the original residents were the Ahwahneechees, of the Miwok tribe of native americans. The park is nearly 1200 square miles and offers many opportunities for Yosemite photography.

Even amateur photographers will find plenty of opportunities to snap some gorgeous pics, especially at El Capitan. This peak is nearly 4000 feet high and is the single largest granite rock in the entire world. It is surrounded by bountiful meadows and makes some very picturesque scenery. El Capitan is one of the most popular destinations within the park and attracts many visitors yearly.

Another popular and tall attraction is the Half Dome, which is located in Yosemite Valley and is almost 4800 feet high. It has been estimated to be 87 million years old and is accessible by a rather strenuous hike to the top. The reward of scaling this giant is worth it for the most experienced of hikers, as they are rewarded with beautiful views of the entire valley and surrounding areas.

While mountains and peaks are beautiful, many people prefer the forests for taking breathtaking photos of nature. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias are located in the southernmost area of Yosemite, and boast at least 500 mature sequoia trees. Many of the tall trees can be seen from the parking lot area, but to get the best vantage points, you need to take a walk into the forest area. This is mostly uphill and can be rather strenuous, so judge accordingly to your own strengths.

For the less hardy, the perfect photo ops can be had at Mirror Lake. An easier walk of about a mile is all that is needed to reach the lake, with its mirrored reflected images of Tenaya Canyon, which is best viewed in the spring or early summer. There is also a nice walk around the lake, which is about 3 miles. Most people can access this hike and there are lots of things to take pictures of.

Mono Lake is the place to visit if birdwatching is the goal. It is home to a large population of migratory birds, including 90% of the nation's California gulls. The water is high in both alkali and salt, and the lake sits on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is one of the oldest lakes in North America and provides some amazing photo opportunities.

If cascading waterfalls are the desired nature feature, head over to Yosemite Falls. These picturesque falls are near the popular main lodge and are a popular location for photography. The falls are around 2400 feet high, making them the fifth largest falls in the world and the largest in the United States.

Whether you are seeking water, mountains, trees or birds for your Yosemite photography, you will not be disappointed in your visit to this beautiful national park. Ansel Adams was a very famous photographer who was known for his many black and white pictures of the various aspects of Yosemite. Even a beginner can take wonderful shots in such a beautiful place.
