Nowadays, the trend in jewellery is changing-people are not really interested in wearing gold anymore. Why? This is because gold has become a common metal now and almost anyone can afford it. Therefore, what separates the jewellery of elites from that of middle class is platinum. Yes, platinum jewellery is a reflection of sophisticated and high class taste.

In malls, you will come across jewellery shops where young couples are bargaining for the most elegant styles of platinum rings because they simply regard gold an old fashioned metal; mind you, old fashioned not out of fashion. Platinum is a metal which is more expensive than gold and lasts for lifetime. Platinum has a soft shine as compared to gold and usually can be found in its pure state.

Not many people know that platinum was discovered by Romans some years back. At that time gold was in; and it was quite hard for platinum to replace it. Soon people became aware of the characteristics of pure platinum and when Romans started wearing platinum rings and bracelets, it gained high end status in no time.

Because platinum is more costly as compared to gold therefore, it demands more care. Make sure that you do not wear platinum while you are jogging or working out at gym because sweat droplets can reduce the shine of this metal. Also avoid wearing platinum while you are playing a sport because any scratches can damage its entire look; unlike gold, platinum does not resists scratch marks.

Platinum is an expensive metal and is not within the range of every one. For this reason, an alternate of platinum has been introduced in the market under the name of white gold. Apparently, white gold and platinum look alike but a deep look will bring out the differences. White gold lacks in natural glow; it has to be given a coat of rhodium for letting out lustre. On the other hand, platinum is more in weight than gold.

There are two tests which you can apply on platinum and white gold to bring out the difference. In the first test, you can make scratches on both the metals with similar intensity; the metal which gets easily scratched is white gold and vice versa. The second test is called heat test in which both metals are exposed to high heat. On cooling, the metal which shows no change in its colour is platinum and the one which turns to a greyish colour is white gold.
